Environments
- Linux talos: Mozilla CI's main Linux perf pool, bare-metal hosts in the MDC1 data centre. Cloudflare: SJC.
- Linux netperf: Mozilla CI's dedicated network-test pool, 6 bare-metal hosts in MDC1. Cloudflare: SJC. Firefox only so far (the hosts lack a current Chrome).
- Windows ref: Mozilla CI, Windows 11 reference hardware (Intel NUC). Cloudflare: SJC.
- GitHub VM: GitHub Actions runner, a shared Azure VM (2 vCPU, 8 GB). Cloudflare colo varies (hover a dot).
- AWS metal:
c5.metal bare-metal instance, us-west-1. Cloudflare: SJC. One short run so far.
- macOS home: MacBook Pro (Apple M1 Max) on a 512 Mbps (½ Gig) Bell home fibre connection in Ottawa, ON. Cloudflare: YUL. Uses a current Nightly build rather than the CI build. Large downloads top out at about 530 Mbps in both browsers, the plan's limit.
Off-site runs use the same test and Firefox build as CI, and run both browsers back to back on one machine.
Reading the charts
- Each dot is one replicate; the bar is the median.
- Times are in ms (lower is better); transfers in Mbps (higher is better).
- Above each chart: medians, the Firefox / Chrome ratio (above 1× = Firefox faster) and the coefficient of variance (noise).
- By hour keeps only hours in which both browsers ran; Time of day folds all days onto 24 hours (UTC).
